Uduak Luke Gives back to Alma Mata, FIDA, NAWOJ on Birthday
In the light of her 40th birthday celebration, Dr. Uduak Onofiok Luke has appreciated four organizations for their roles in helping to shape the society.
The organizations are: the Akwa Ibom State Council of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES) her Alma Mata, Union Secondary School, Oko-Ita, Ibiono-Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
Dr. Luke who took time to extol the values of the groups explained that their roles were infinitesimal in building the society.
“FIDA has given back life to countless women who once lost hope to domestic violence and abuse. Their role in reintegrating the downtrodden back to the society is laudable. The environment has given us life for as long as we can remember. The Nigerian Environmental Society is the only society that is doing something positively about this earth. NAWOJ has done remarkably well by uncovering the ills in the society. The changes in the profession has made their job demanding but they’re still doing amazingly well. I want to support their training and skill-ups…”, she said, and announced a support of Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N500, 000) to each of the three groups.
Dr. Luke who is Wife of the Member representing Etinan/Nsit Ibom/Nsit Ubium Federal Constituency, at the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Onofiok Luke also paid glowing tributes to her Alma Mata, Union Secondary School, for being the vehicle she boarded to the path of greatness, and announced a 5-Year University scholarship to the school’s best graduating student.
“I’m also going to appreciate my Alma Mata, Union Secondary School, Okoita for building me up to where I am today. The Best Graduating Student of the school will be given a 5-year scholarship through the University” – Dr. Uduak Onofiok Luke
Earlier, the Environmental Toxicologist had expressed profound gratitude to her husband, Rt. Hon. Onofiok Luke for being her pillar of support throughout her life’s sojourn. “He has been my pillar of support and is always there to encourage and motivate me. I pray God to bless and keep him for me”, she stated.
Reacting to the support given, the State Chairperson of FIDA, Mrs. Emem Ette applauded the ingenuity of the giver, while describing the support as an answered prayer.
“It is only the heart that can do this. The Lord sees our heart and then, he sends help. Uduak Ekong is in our shelter management subcommittee team and she has seen that we we’ve been struggling to buy food. Today, I had decided to let go some girls because we could no longer keep them. I have a lot of them in my house and I no longer have space, and because of the times, I can no longer keep them in other people’s homes; but immediately you said N500,000, I sent a message to the shelter manager to keep our girls”, she said tearfully.
She told the gathering that FIDA is not just an association of women Lawyers trying to showcase their talents but, a body of committed women doing what is just, righteous and godly. She therefore called for more support from individuals and the government to help them ensure a safe environment for women and children.
Also responding, the Chairperson NAWOJ, Comrade Uduak Ekong commended Dr. Luke and her family for the timely gift. She noted that the financial support given would be instrumental to the forthcoming training of the women journalists and would as well encourage them to do more in their reportorial duties.
Meanwhile, the Secretary of the NES, Mr. Michael Eyo, while calling for caution on environmental degrading activities also thanked Dr. Luke for the support given them. He noted that it was the first time an individual has singled out the society for support.
“We have been making efforts to get sponsors on several occasions like the World Environment Day but none of our efforts have really yielded much. What she has done will go a long way in helping us carry out our advocacy for a sustainable environment as we make our little contribution to the environment”, he maintained.
The event was attended by a friend of the celebrator, Mrs. Inemesit Enobong Uwah, members of FIDA, NAWOJ and NES, amongst others.
