The Governor of Akwa Ibom state, Mr Udom Emmanuel has pledged to implement the payment of N30,000 minimum wage for workers in Akwa Ibom as approved by the federal government recently.
He disclosed this on Thursday, April 25, at the 8th Quadrennial Delegates Conference of the Nigeria Labour Congress, held at Ibom Hall in Uyo, the State capital.
Declaring the event open, the Governor who was represented by the Commissioner for Economic Development, Labour and Manpower Planning, Hon. Ekong Sampson, restated that the implementation of the new minimum wage will never be an issue because his administration is committed to appreciating the effort of workers in the state by sustaining the mechanism that will ensure their happiness through good working condition.
The Governor charged workers to elect credible leaders that will have the interest of the workers at heart as well as partnering government to achieve a vibrant and robust diversified economy that will be piloted by the labour in the state.
In her goodwill message, the Head of Civil Service, Akwa Ibom state, Mrs Ekereobong Akpan described the theme of the conference as topical and apt, judging from the fact that the conference will among other things provide a veritable platform for workers to objectively and critically appraise their contributions as employees to the state and national development so far as government responses to the demand of labour is concern.
She noted with optimism the various contributions and renewed sense of commitment and patriotism of workers in the state which she said, has aided in the realization of government’s policy thrust.

Mrs Akpan commended the governor for being worker-friendly and having genuine concern for their welfare through regular and prompt payment of financial entitlements and for assuring the workers that the new minimum wage will not be a labour issue in the state.
Others who spoke at the session included, the national president of Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, represented by Comrade Emmanuel Igbaya, Comrade Unyime Usoro – SA to the Governor on labour, Acting Chairperson of Akwa Ibom NLC, Comrade Paulina Isaac, Chairman of TUC, Comrade Akamba Awak among others.
The 8th Quadrennial Delegates Conference with the theme “Nigeria Workers; Better Renumeration for Labour Efficiency and Productivity” featured election of officers who will pilot the affairs of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Akwa Ibom State Council for the next four years.
