Health Minister Summoned over Poor State of Teaching Hospitals

The Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, has been summoned by the Senate to give an account of the current state of facilities and healthcare services in Nigerian teaching hospitals.

This came on the heels of a motion sponsored by Senator David Umaru, at the Wednesday, May 8 Plenary, which reported the poor quality of service in teaching hospitals across the country.

The report in Senator Umaru’s motion had it that “most teaching hospitals in the country have been overstretched, forcing patients to sleep on bare floors, plastic mats and unhygienic conditions”.

Following this, the Senate invited the Minister of Health to appear before it for questioning. It also tasked its committee on health to within one week, conduct an emergency investigative hearing on the state of healthcare services in the nation’s teaching hospitals.
