…Donates Hospital Equipment, Text Books To Mark Birthday

The Member representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency and Deputy Chairman, Communications Committee in Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Hon. Unyime Idem has described education as a viable gateway to greatness.

Hon. Idem made this assertion on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 while addressing pupils of QIC Central School, Ikot Akpa Nkuk, Ukanafun and QIC School, Ikpe Akpa Ewe, Oruk Anam LGA.

Idem who chose to celebrate his birthday with pupils of the village schools charged them to take their studies serious noting that education has the potency of transforming their lives and that of their families. He said with education, the pupils will be well refined to have a good life and contribute their quota to the development of their immediate community and Nigeria at large.

“Let me pay homage to the Head Master for keeping the children neat. This is commendable. The teachers also deserve kudos for doing a good job and for their invaluable contributions to the molding of the leaders of tomorrow. I am here to celebrate my birthday with pupils of this school. I woke up this morning thinking on how best to celebrate my birthday. I would have traveled to Lagos, Abuja, Dubai or take a vacation on this special day of my life. I chose to come spend it with you because you are all important to me”.

Describing the pupils as leaders of tomorrow, the Ukanafun-born politician told the children that for them to be future governors, council chairmen, house of representative members, medical doctors, accountants, lawyers and engineers etc, they must work hard to come out in flying colours by passing all their examinations.

“I see you all here as leaders of tomorrow. Seated here are future governors, council chairmen, house of representative members, medical doctors, accountants, lawyers and engineers. You are the future leaders of tomorrow. To achieve that, you must work hard to come out in flying colours by passing all their examinations. Education is a viable gateway to greatness. You cannot be great, if you do not burn your midnight candles to study your books. If you fail to make it educationally, you will end up being a jobman and labourer working in construction sites carrying sand, cement and blocks. Do not be like the children who say whether they go to school or not, they will eat”.

He therefore urged government at all levels to ensure that adequate budgetary provisions are made to provide the conducive learning environment for school pupils by ensuring that learning facilities are put in place.

Hon. Idem used the occasion to donate English and Mathematics text books to the two schools and urged the pupils to make good use of them. He admonished them to make the books their friends.

“I did not come with birthday cake, silver nor gold to give to you. I came with a tool that will help transform your lives to be leaders of tomorrow if properly utilized. I came with English and mathematics text books. Without the knowledge in these books, you cannot get admission into higher institutions. Make these books your best friends. Quality education will help you change the fortunes of your family, community, local government, federal constituency and state”

Responding, the Head Teachers of the schools visited, Mr. Uwem Etokeren and Mrs. Elizabeth Ikpagha, expressed happiness over the generosity of Hon. Idem and his decision to celebrate his birthday with pupils of their schools.

They described Hon. Idem’s gesture as exemplary, noting that it was the first time a Lawmaker will visit their schools to celebrate his birthday and donate books for the betterment of the pupils.

They prayed God to bless Hon. Idem, make his tenure eventful and take him to higher levels of responsibilities.

Still in the spirit of the celebration, Hon. Idem donated hospital equipment worth several thousands of naira to Primary Health Care Centre, Ikot Akpa Nkuk Ukanafun and Health Centre in Ibianga village, Oruk Anam.

Although the Lawmaker has in the last 15 years visited hospitals during his birthday to offset bills of indigent patients, this year’s birthday took a different dimension with donation of hospital equipment.

Presenting the equipment, Hon. Idem noted that as part of his campaign promises, he has a duty to ensure that the health of the people is taken care of.

He urged the people to ensure that they always visit hospitals for routine medical checkup, adding that equipment donated would go a long way to boost facilities at the health centres and assist in meeting the health needs of the people who before now sought medical attention in bigger cities of the state. He promised to ensure that other needs of the medical centres are given due attention.

Responding on behalf of management and staff of primary health care centre Ukanafun, the visibly elated Deaconess Idorenyin Akpan Uko described the visit of Hon. Idem as a gift from heaven.

Deaconess Akpanuko said Hon. Idem was not the first person to go to the National Assembly but that his tenure is attracting good things to the federal constituency in so short a time. She noted that it was the first time the hospital received equipment from a political office holder and thanked the Lawmaker for the gesture. She prayed God’s blessings on him.

Speaking on behalf of Ibianga Maternity Health Centre, the Village Head, Chief Gabriel Jonah Inwek, expressed happiness over the donation of medical equipment by Hon. Idem. He stated that since the hospital was built, it was the first time a highly placed office holder made a visit to the hospital. He said the gesture of Hon. Idem was the right step in the right direction as it will put smiles on the faces of patients who found it difficult accessing medical attention.

After donating the medical equipment, Hon. Idem moved round the various wards of the medical centres, cleared bills of some patients and gave cash to others for their upkeep.
