The Member representing Etinan/Nsit Ibom/Nsit Ubium Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Hon. Onofiok Luke said that Parliamentarians must device effective means of communication with their Constituents in carrying out their functions.

Hon. Luke stated this when he presented a paper on Parliamentary Communication and Report Writing Skills at a 3- Day Special Capacity Building Programme for Kogi House of Assembly Members at the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) National Assembly, Abuja.

The Member of parliament said that given that parliament is people-oriented and public-centred, communication and reporting are critical to its activities and business.

He added that communication Initiatives that support transparency, publicity and two-way dialogue will be core to any modern parliament’s communication strategy.

Hon. Luke charged that parliamentary communication and reporting should by all means remain precise, clear and unambiguous, adding that parliamentary communication and report writing must be objective and nonpartisan, reflecting the view of every member.

The Federal Lawmaker reminded the Lawmakers from Kogi State House of Assembly that the enormous power they possess, they hold in trust for the people.

He advised that Constituency Briefings, Town Hall Meetings, public hearings and other forms of communication should be adopted to carry the people along.

In his reaction, the Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Hon Matthew Kolawole, thanked NILDS for the capacity building programme and particularly, his former colleague in the Forum of Speakers, Hon. Luke for the brilliance he has always demonstrated.

He recalled how Hon. Luke’s intelligent contributions to their forum helped position the body. Hon Kolawole said he is not surprised to see the former Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly rise to the Green Chamber of the Legislature.
