…Aniekan Bassey Emerges Speaker

The leadership baton of the 7th Akwa Ibom State Legislature has fallen on Rt. Hon Aniekan Bassey and member representing Uruan State Constituency.

This happened on Monday, June 10 2019, shortly after the inauguration of the 7th Assembly at 10: am.

Bassey’s emergence as the 7th Assembly Speaker was considered following a motion for the nomination of the Speaker, moved by the member representing Onna State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Nse Essien; and seconded by the member representing Nsit Atai State constituency, Rt. Hon. Mark Esset.

The new speaker and his Deputy, Rt. Hon. Princess Felicia Bassey of Okobo State constituency, are of the People’s Democratic party (PDP).

Other principal officers of the House are Udo Kerian, member representing Oruk Anam as Majority Leader; Emmanuel Ekpeyong, member for as Chief Whip, and Rt. Hon Nse Essien, member for Onna as Deputy chief whip.

Platinum.ng gathered that the position of Speaker was zoned to Uyo federal constituency consisting Uyo, Uruan, Ibesikpo Asutan and Nsit  Atai local government areas.

Asides Aniekan Bassey, others who were lobbying for the speakership position were Hon. Anietie Eka, member representing Uyo State constituency; Rt. Hon. Mark Esset, member representing Nsit Atai and Rt. Hon Aniekan Uko, member for Ibesikpo Asutan state constituency.

The new speaker is said to be enjoying the backing of some influential returning lawmakers who feel he is “easy going and accessible”.

Administering the oath office to the 25 Lawmakers, the Clerk of the House, Mmayen Umoren, charged the lawmakers to place the state’s interest above others.

In his acceptance speech, the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey, thanked the members for considering him fit for the position, and assured them of an all-inclusive administration. He also promised to ensure a robust working relationship with other arms of the government to ensure the success of the Assembly, and to effectively discharge his duties.
