The Governor of Akwa Ibom state, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, on Monday, May 20, paid a thank-you visit to members of the state House of Assembly in Uyo, for their support for his administration throughout his first-year tenure.
The Governor’s visit which coincided with the 2-day pre-induction workshop organised for incoming assemblymen, saw the state leader urging the 7th Assembly to emulate the outgoing Lawmakers.
Governor Emmanuel recognized the 6th assembly as being instrumental to the success of his first term administration and appreciated them for supporting his industrialisation bid.
While expressing optimism that the incoming Lawmakers will score as much as the outgoing, the Governor acknowledged the understanding and cooperation of the 6th Assembly as being contributory factors to the enhancement of the state economy, and charged the incoming 7th Assembly to be ready for greater partnership in his second term tenure.
Speaking at the event which drew facilitators from the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), the Speaker of the State House, Barr Onofiok Luke, noted that the pre-induction workshop was organized to prepare the incoming members intellectually for the demands of leadership ahead of them.
He stressed that a Lawmaker needed to be “a creation of excellent legislative ideas” obtainable from intellectual trainings and meetings to be able to stand out and face squarely the challenges of law-making. He appreciated the Governor for his support for the legislature, saying he (the Governor), “has proven his mettle as a democrat in words and in action, allowing for the independence of the state legislature, the very reason that Akwa Ibom assembly is one of Nigeria’s most fecund and most stable legislatures”.
The workshop which had in attendance current members and members-elect was addressed by Rt. Hon. Usenobong Akpabio, who spoke on “Powers, Privileges, Immunities and Limitations of the Legislature”.
On Tuesday, May 21, a two-term member of the House and representative of Ibiono Ibom State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Barr Ịme Okon, will lecture on “The Principles of Separation of Powers and Doctrines of Checks and Balances”.
