The Federal Government of Nigeria has congratulated the Super Eagles for being the first team to qualify for the round of 16 at the ongoing 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Olusade Adesola, conveyed the government’s commendation through the Ministry’s Director of Press, Mrs. Blessing Lere-Adams, on Thursday, June 27.
The statement reads in part: “In the light of the scintillating performance of the national team, the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development joins millions of football loving Nigerians to congratulate the Super Eagles.

“We commend them for the doggedness on the field of play as well as clinching the ticket to the round of 16 after defeating their Guinean counterpart,” Adesola said.
The government assured the players of support for their welfare and encouraged them to bring the AFCON trophy back home.
The 2019 AFCON, commenced on Friday June 21 in Egypt with an opening performance by Femi Kuti.
The Super Eagles defeated the Syli Nationale of Guinea 1-0, on Wednesday, June 26, to book a place at the knock-out stage of the competition.
The players will play their last group game against debutants, Madagascar on Sunday, 29 before the end of the entire play in July 19.
