The Executive Chairman of Mkpat Enin Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom state, Hon. Ekanem Brown has doled out scholarships to children of Nigeria ex-servicemen who lost their lives defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
The Council Chairman made the announcement during his speech at the 2020-Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebrations/emblem and appeal fund launch held at the cenotaph, located in the Council Secretariat in Mkpat Enin.
Hon. Brown, who has won several awards for his outstanding performance especially in the area of human capacity development, also announced the approval of business startup capital to widows of the fallen heroes.
He said “All hands must be in the deck to care for the welfare of the descendants of our fallen heroes who gave it all, including their lives to defend the territorial integrity of our Nation.
“We must move away from mere talks to action because some of the legionaries and their family members are really suffering “.
Reacting to the plea of the Chairman of Nigeria Legion, Mkpat Enin Chapter, who had earlier in his speech requested for support to children and widows of the fallen heroes, Mkpat Enin Chairman said “I listened carefully to the Legion Chairman’s request.
“On that note, our administration will give scholarships with immediate effect to 4 children of fallen heroes who already have valid admission in any higher Institution in the country. Where there is no undergraduate, this scholarship shall be substituted with a vocational training on vocations as decided by the beneficiaries”.
Continuing, he said, “we will also give businesses start-up capital to 4 widows of fallen heroes so that they can engage in trade of their choice”.
Hon. Brown requested that names of recommended beneficiaries be forwarded to him as soon as possible by the Nigeria legion members in the Local Government.
Also present at the celebration were; members of the executive and legislative council, former Council Chairman, Hon. Mfon Nkanteen, former House of Assembly member, Hon. Udobong Ekpo, PDP Chapter Chairman, Rt. Hon. Anietie Sunday, royal fathers and others.
