… AkwaPoly Students tasked on good conduct
The Ethical and Attitudinal Reorientation Commission (EARCOM) Akwa Ibom State, has commenced sensitization Campaign against Social Vices in Tertiary institutions in the State.
The Commission on Tuesday, March 10 officially flagged-off the sensitization Campaign at Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, where the Board members, Management and Staff of EARCOM, led by the Executive Chairman, Dr Dorothy Thompson flagged-off the well-attended Conference.
The event which was chaired by Rev. Mrs Sylvia Umoh also had in attendance, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Sir Charles Udoh as Special Guest of Honour; former Dean of Students Affairs, University of Uyo, Professor Effiong Johnson as Guest Speaker, the Deputy Rector of AkwaPoly, Dr. (Engr.) Okon Osung and other top management staff of the Institution, Security Chiefs, Student Leaders and Clerics.
Declaring the purpose of the gathering, the Chairman of EARCOM who was represented by a Board Member, Pastor Ime David, said, the theme of the seminar, which is, ‘Raising Socially Responsible citizens’, has a sub theme; Academics, Not Vices, and is intended to steer the students away from Social vices, including, cultism, rape, prostitution, violence, examination malpractices, drug abuse, gangsterism, bullying, truancy, obtaining by fraud otherwise known as Yahoo yahoo or 419, perverse sex behaviors such as lesbianism and homosexuality, among other evils prevalent in the society.
Dr Thompson thanked the State Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel for what he observed as, his unwavering support for EARCOM in the onerous task of mass sensitization for Social and attitudinal reorientation and appreciated the Management of the Institution and Students for granting EARCOM the opportunity to hold the event in the School.
Addressing the gathering, the Special Guest and Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Sir Charles Udoh, while recounting his days then as a student in the University of Uyo, explained that, the main purpose of being a students in school is to acquire education and not indulging in activities that are capable of destroying their purpose in life, urging them not to loose focus.
He tasked the students to shun social vices that can hinder them from achieving their purpose in life. The Information Commissioner urged the Students to attune their mindset to achieving success in their educational pursuit and nothing else.
“if you don’t see yourself as an instrument of success, even when success is standing right before you, your eyes may not see it.” – Sir Udoh Stated.
On her part, the Chairman on the occasion, Rev (Mrs) Sylvia Imoh while speaking, charged the students to always focus on their destinies and turn their desires away from the allure of evil.
According to her, “when you allow your eyes to see evils, your whole body would be full of darkness.” Rev. Mrs Umoh urged the students to embrace Godliness, hardwork and discipline as such disposition will guarantee their success.
Also, the Guest speaker – Professor Effiong Johnson of thea University of Uyo equally advised the Students of the Institution to stay clear from any misconduct that is against the rules and regulations of the Institution. He identified social vices to include; Exams malpractices,a Cultism and prostitution among others, maintaining that, those vices can easily destroy the purpose and destinies of the students if they fail to toe the path that leads them to success.
Pastor Michael Onah of The Lord’s Chosen Church in his exhortation read from Jeremiah 22: 29-30, explaining that, the purpose God deposited in humans was to develop and improve the society, State and Nation, adding that, the only way of achieving the purpose is by returning to God and trusting only in Him.
In his remarks, the Special Assistant to Governor Udom Emmanuel on Reorientation, Mr Ekpeno Gold, lauded EARCOM for the initiative and enjoined the students who turned out massively for the event to become Ambassadors and crusaders for social responsibility and values reorientation.
The Deputy Rector, of AkwaPoly, Dr. Osung expressed appreciation and delight that EARCOM elected to commence its Sensitization Campaign at the institution. Dr Osung who described the campaign as worthwhile and a welcome development, admonished the students to submit themselves to God and resist the devil as to succeed in life.
Others who spoke during the event were; the Assistant Commandant of Nigeria Civil Defense Corp, E. E. Peters and Elder Isaac Michael.
The EARCOM Boss revealed that, the campaign will move to other Tertiary institutions in other senatorial Districts of the State.
