We Need a Strong and Responsible Press – Effiong Bob

The Chairman of Comfort FM Radio and Chairman, Board of Trustees of Ritman University, Senator Effiong Bob, has said that for society to function well, it needs a strong, vibrant and responsible press.

Senator Bob who spoke on Monday, February 17, 2020, when the leadership of the NUJ in Akwa Ibom State paid him a courtesy visit, said that to maintain the integrity of the journalism profession, the Union must purge its ranks of quacks and report only the truth at all times.

He said that the advent of social media has become a nightmare for the journalism profession as all those who write on various platforms seem to be doing the work of journalists adding that this has necessitated journalists to step up the ante of their professionalism.

The two-term senator of the Federal Republic pointed out that it has become necessary for the leadership of the Union to open a register for all trained and registered members of the NUJ to avoid a situation where quacks drag the name of the profession in the mud.

Senator Bob recalled that his relationship with the NUJ began in 1990 stating that it has not waned since then adding that with his establishment of comfort FM Radio in Uyo, that relationship will be even stronger.

He used the opportunity to thank the press for reporting the policies and programmes of the Udom Emmanuel administration positively while also giving the member representing Nsit Ubium State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Hon (Barr) Otobong E. Bob, extensive coverage since he got into the House of Assembly.

Speaking about Comfort FM Radio, Senator Bob said that from its inception, he has given the management of the station a free hand and encouraged them to be nonpartisan in their reportage and programming.

He promised to always identify with the leadership of the Union.

Earlier in his speech, the Chairman of the NUJ in the state, Comrade Amos Etuk, thanked Senator Bob for hosting the Union in spite of the short notice and not minding his busy schedule.

The State NUJ boss said that the current leadership of the Union was bent on sanitizing the Union.

This, according to him will be done through the training and retraining of members.

He said that the Union will welcome wise counsel from people like Senator Effiong Bob who has been a long time friend and supporter of the press.

Comrade Amos Etuk said that the Union successfully hosted a round-table for political parties to fashion out the way forward for the peace, security and development of the state.

At the courtesy visit were all the officers of the State Chapter of the NUJ in Akwa Ibom State.
