A’Ibom Police Makes 27 Arrests, Rescues Kidnapped Foreign National

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested over 27 suspects linked to various robbery operations in the state in the last one month, and rescued a foreign national, Gassan Naser who was abducted in April, 2019.

The State Police Commissioner, CP Zaki Ahmed, disclosed this on Friday, May 17, at a briefing held at the Police Headquarters in Uyo.

The Commissioner who was represented by the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Odiko Macdon, announced that men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) rescued Mr. Gassan Naser, a staff of Zenith Construction Company in Mbiaya Uruan, who was abducted on Tuesday 30/4/2019 by hoodlums who shot and killed one Sgt. Mohammed Sarba of 26 PMF, attached to Zone 6 for special duty, and carted away his AK-47 rifle”. The hoodlums, he said, have been behind the incessant kidnappings/murders in the State over the years, including the Kidnap of Gen. Edet Akpan (rtd), killing of His Highness, Robert James Obot, Paramount Ruler of Nsit Ubium; killing of Dr. Udosen of St. Lukes Hospital, Anua, and others. He said that the suspects who were also responsible for robberies around Uyo and Calabar, had three of them gunned down as they tried to escape during rescue operation.

“On May 1, following a credible intelligence, the Crack team of Anti-Cultism Squad clamped down a notorious criminal, one Bassey Patrick ‘m’, aged 34yrs, who specialized in the stealing and vandalization of electrical installations. The suspect led Operatives to Onitsha electrical market in Anambra State where three transformers vandalized and stolen from Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Science and Technology were recovered. Also recovered, were two transformers suspected to have been stolen from other places”.

“On May 13, at about 3pm, based on a tip-off, men of Ibesikpo Asutan Division responded swiftly to a distress call at Nung Udoe in Ibesikpo Asutan L.G.A, where a notorious criminal, one Eneffiong Michael Akpan a.k.a “Character” ‘m’, who has been in the wanted list of the Command for years, was robbing and terrorizing the people. On sighting the Operatives, he engaged them in a gun duel and was gunned down. One locally made pistol, one live cartridge and an expended cartridge were recovered”.

“Following a tip-off, SARS Operatives arrested the leader of a-five-man robbery gang, one Isaiah Ekpenyong ‘m’ who robbed their victims of Laptops, seven phones, computer and the sum of three hundred thousand naira, at Obio Etoi Community, Uyo on April 25, 2019.

“On April 28, following a distress call, Operatives of Abak Division arrested the following: Promise Ezekiel ‘m’, Idongesit Etim ‘m’, Cosmos Udofia ‘m’, Moses Etim ‘m’ and Godwin Essien ‘m’ who conspired with other gang members, and invaded Full Gospel Church, Abak, with machetes and axes, held members hostage and dispossessed them of their phones and money”.

“On May, 1, at about 5:30am, Operatives of Ikot Abasi Division arrested one Enobong Ita Ibong ‘m’ and Ikobong William Udo ‘m’ of Oruk Anam LGA, who blocked one Mfon Ufot Thompson ‘m’, along Ikot Okwo Road, Ikot Abasi L.G.A and robbed him of his Q-link 125 motorcycle. Operatives also recovered one locally made pistol, one live cartridge and his Q-link 125 motorcycle with Reg. No. NS 228 QH”.

“Based on credible intelligence on May 1, DPO Mkpat Enin Division led a combined team of Mkpat Enin Division and  operatives from Anti-Kidnapping Squad to raid the residence of notorious kidnapping/armed robbery suspect, one Yellow, (other names unknown) ‘m’ and other identified criminal hideouts at Ikot Isighe village in Mkpat Enin L.G.A and arrested Idoreyin Akpan Henry ‘m’, Godwin Patrick Isong ‘m’, Christian Bassey Henry ‘m’, Francis Francis Awana ‘m’, Endurance Samuel Ufot ‘f’, Idongesit Sunday Akpan ‘f’ and Esther Akpan Monday ‘f’. One Beretta pistol, two locally made pistols with two live cartridges, seven GSM phones, one army uniform, a gas cylinder, wraps of weed suspected to be Indian hemp and one face mask were recovered”.

“Emanating from a reliable intelligence report at the disposal of Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the Command, on May 3, at about 1:30am, operatives raided black spots at Obot Itu Village in Itu L.G.A, and arrested one Isaac Asuquo ‘m’, aged 21, Wisdom Okon ‘m’, aged 19 and two others, while other suspects escaped to a nearby bush. During Interrogation, the suspects confessed to being members of “Red Skin and Vikings” confraternity terrorizing citizens around Uyo Metropolis”.

“Arising from a tip-off on May 3, 2019, at about 10:20am, Operatives of Onna Division responded swiftly to a distress call at Iko town in Eastern Obolo L.G.A, and arrested one Sunday Akpan Nelson ‘m’, aged 35yrs, who macheted one Utomobong Elijah Akpan ‘m’ to death on 29/4/2019.

“On May 9, operatives of ‘A’ Division were mobilized to Eka Street where they searched and recovered a concealed Benz Truck with Reg. No. XN 484 SMK Lagos, loaded with 11 generating sets, 3 flat screen televisions, 1 laptop computer, 5 motor batteries, 1 Jincheng motorcycle, 1 gas cooker, 1 printer, 4 rolls of electric wire, 1 stabilizer, 1 gas cylinder and several other items, ready to be taken out of the State. The following suspects were arrested in connection with the crime: Chukwuemeka Nnadi ‘m’, Chidera Emmanuel ‘m’, Ukeme Edem Hanson ‘m’, Wisdom Amos Okon ‘m’, while the owners of the stolen items identified their properties”, the Commissioner stated. 

He noted that some of the suspects have been charged to court while others still being investigated will be charged to court on completion of investigation.

CP Ahmed stressed his commitment to maintaining law and order, and providing top-notch security in every part of the State, to further improve on the prevailing peaceful nature of the State.

He assured them that the Command under his watch will not rest on its oars until criminals desist from criminality or leave the State, adding that he was determined to make the State very hot for them.
