The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Economic Development and Ibom Deep Seaport, Mr. Akan Okon, has noted that accurate data collection remains the hallmark for sustainable development of any society.
The Commissioner made the assertion recently during the inauguration of the newly elected executives of the Nigerian Statistical Association (NSA), Akwa Ibom State Chapter.
The event took place at the Conference Room of the Ministry of Economic Development and Ibom Deep Seaport.
Mr. Okon who inferred that the Akwa Ibom State Government under the leadership of Mr. Udom Emmanuel believes in the efficacy of accurate data collection, disclosed that plans are underway to establish the State Bureau of Statistics which will assist to put in place socio economic studies, that would end padded figures often presented by global organisations.
Okon who said expressed that Statisticians play critical roles in the development of the society, advised that every budget be based on statistical assessment as “evidence-based decision is always the best for every society.
While commending the Akwa Ibom State Chapter of the NSA for successfully conducting a peaceful and credible election, the Commissioner congratulated the newly sworn executive and prayed God’s grace upon them for effectiveness in their different offices.
He pledged the continued support of his Ministry towards the success of the Association.
In his inaugural speech, the newly elected chairman of the NSA, Dr. Nse S. Udoh who spoke on behalf of others, hinted that so far, his administration has contributed a memorandum to the state’s Post COVID-19 Economic Reconstruction Committee for the establishment of the State Bureau of Statistics which serves as a bedrock for decision making and sound economic policies, among others.
“Official statistics has grown beyond mere collection of data, analysis and interpretation of results to support decision making; to the level of a performance measures of achievement of State and Federal Governments on major economic outlook and standard of living of the citizens “.
He promised not to betray the confidence reposed on him and other members.
The Head of Department of Statistics, University of Uyo, Prof. Mfoniso Umoren; the electoral board Chairman and a former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Development, Elder Eyaikop Umanah, both noted that the Association is made up of Statisticians from different Ministries, Departments and Agencies who have come together to work for the common goal of a better society.
They expressed satisfaction over the smooth conduct of the election and pledged their support for the Ministry of Economic Development and Ibom Deep Seaport and the general Administration of Governor Udom Emmanuel.
The new executive has Dr. Nse S. Udoh as Chairman, Mr. Peter Akpan as Vice Chairman, Mr. Ukeme Asuquo as Secretary and Mr. Aniekan Aniekan as Assistant secretary. Others include: Dr. Iniabasi Etuk- Treasurer, Mrs. Esther Ukpe- Financial Secretary and Mr. Nnamkere Issac- Welfare Officer.
