…say govt is more than willing to help them succeed
The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Glory Edet has called for the involvement of more women in farming activities, while assuring that the State Government is more than willing to support them in succeeding.
Dr Edet said this on Tuesday, February, 2021, at the inauguration of the Chapter Coordinators and Secretaries of the National Women in Agriculture Multipurpose Cooperative Society (WIA), at the open field of the Ministry.
The Commissioner who commended Governor Udom Emmanuel for prioritising on Agriculture, described the strides recorded so far under the present administration as gigantic and prayed God for more grace on Him to continue same.
She noted that amongst other things, Governor Emmanuel has ensured the distribution of interest free loans and seedlings to Vegetable, Cassava, Rice and Onion farmers as well as farm inputs to further encourage them and ease their toil.
Dr Edet therefore called on women farmers in the State to see agriculture as a business, while assuring them of the Ministry’s continuous partnership with their group.
Even more, she encouraged the women to be steadfast in taking advantage of the first farming season starting March, while charging them to consider developing their farms strictly for the group.
While appreciating the mushroom trainers for impacting well on the trainees, she charged them (the trainees) to be committed in the production and cultivation of Mushroom.
She gave the women onion seedlings to further encourage onion cultivation and urged them to invest more in cassava cultivation to boost food sufficiency in the State.
Earlier in her address, the Chairman of the Women in Agriculture, Mrs. Precious Edet appreciated the Commissioner for hosting the group and assured the Ministry of their readiness to promote agriculture in the State.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs Mary Ukoette Bassey also appreciated the women for participating in Agriculture and the Commissioner, for interpreting the vision of the Governor in the Agric sector. She however charged the women to extend their tentacles to the nooks and crannies of the hinterland to further strengthen the local farmers.
Mrs Glory Ekanem, a Mushroom Farm Trainer gave an overview of Mushroom, the Economic value, Health benefits, Nutritional value, Preservation and challenges of cultivating mushroom.
Speaking on behalf of the representatives of mushroom trainees. Mr. Idongesit Emmanuel appreciated the Commissioner for the opportunity given them to be trained on mushroom cultivation. He however appealed that consideration be given to people who would like to join the training on Mushroom cultivation.
The event featured the inauguration of Chapter officers and Secretaries of National Women in Agriculture; Presentation of Onion and Okro Seedlings to farmers, presentation of Certificates to Mushroom Trainees and presentation of take-off grants to the trainees.
