The Akwa Ibom State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has described the appointment of Comrade Ini Ememobong as Commissioner for Information and Strategy as a rare gift to the Union by Gov. Udom Emmanuel.
This position was stated by the NUJ leadership on Tuesday, August 4, when the new State Information boss paid a familiarization visit to State NUJ Council.
In his remarks, the new Commissioner sued for increased cooperation between media managers/stakeholders and the government, and thanked them for the support he enjoyed as PDP State Publicity Secretary, while urging them to do more for him and for the state in his new assignment.
He particularly emphasized the importance of proper reportage of government’s activities as well as professional dissemination of information; reiterating the need for effective channels of communication between government and the NUJ in order to circumvent avoidable misunderstandings in the line of duty.
Subsequently, he announced the appointment of Mr. Imoh Etimudo as his Press Union Liaison officer who will liaise between his office and all unions related to information management.
Comrade Ememobong described members of the fourth estate of the realm as partners in progress and called on them to partner with the state government by way of positive reportage of Gov. Udom Emmanuel’s completion agenda, while pledging the commitment of his office to partner effectively with the NUJ.
In his response, State Chairman of NUJ, Comrade Amos Etuk thanked Gov. Udom Emmanuel for Ini Ememobong’s appointment as Information and Strategy Commissioner, describing him as a competent hand that can stir the information machinery of the state to achieve desired results. He expressed the willingness of journalists to work with Ememobong and “extended a very firm hand of fellowship” to the new commissioner, while briefing him of the Union’s activities so far.
He particularly appealed for a review of the Health Insurance Policy for journalists earlier approved by Gov. Udom Emmanuel and solicited for the implementation of the 22% weigh-in-allowance for members of the NUJ and specifically sought government’s assistance to the National Union of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) in view of their forthcoming conference. He also informed Comrade Ememobong of infrastructural projects embarked upon by the union and appealed for support.
The State NUJ Chairman applauded Gov. Udom Emmanuel’s sustained support to the NUJ and his favorable disposition to the media in Akwa Ibom State, stating that the NUJ is committed to projecting the ideals of the Governor’s completion agenda.
Others who also spoke at the event were: Chairman, Federated Chapel, Mr. Inimfon Silas; Chairman, Correspondent Chapel, Mrs. Idongesit Ashimeri; Vice Chairman of the State Union, Nene Afia.
