The African Women Entrepreneurship Program, (AWEP) has sought for partnership with the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, to empower women in the State.
Executive members of the state branch of the International NGO, led by its State Coordinator, Mrs Victory Ebong, solicited the Ministry’s support in the area of sponsorship and mobility to aid outreaches to women doing businesses; networking with other businesses for impact and business deals; knowledge sharing and business network expansion modules.
The group requested these when they visited the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Dr Glory Edet at the State Secretariat on Monday, May 6.
AWEP, created on September 29, 2018 with the vision of helping, uplifting and supporting women, has embarked on entrepreneurial projects such as “back to farm” which exposes women to the art of plantain farming, fishery, piggery, snail and rabbit farming; “smile again project”, a project conducted quarterly to provide women with medical necessities, workshop and empowerment seminars to educate and enlighten them on available opportunities within their environs and ways to explore them for wealth creation.
During the visit, the group, in recognition of the Commissioner’s humanitarian contribution towards women empowerment, development and care for the vulnerable in the State, presented her with an award of excellence, and encouraged her to continue in her good works.
Responding, Dr. Edet expressed the Ministry’s readiness to synergize with the NGO in being a ladder for the upliftment of women across all cadres of the state.
She gave credit to the NGO for its role in ensuring sustainable entrepreneurial development among women through research, advocacy and policy making, and also encouraged them to step up their deeds by getting to women at the grassroot level across the 31 local government areas of the state.
She appreciated them for the award given her and promised to do more for the women of Akwa Ibom State.
