AIT Reopens after 24-Hour Suspension, Goes on Air

The African Independent Television (AIT), and its Radio counterpart, Raypower, are back on air 24 hours after they were suspended by the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) for alleged breach of broadcasting code.

The NBC had suspended the stations from operating on Thursday, June 6, for “use of inflammatory, divisive, inciting broadcasts, and media propaganda against the government and, the NBC for performing its statutory functions of regulating the broadcast industry in Nigeria”.

However, an Abuja High Court presided by Justice Inyang Ekwo had on the same day asked the NBC to revoke its ban on Daar Communications, as they did not breach any broadcasting code.

The suspension which generated pressure on the Broadcasting umpire from individuals, the media community, civil right activists and politicians, saw the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) give the NBC a 24-hour ultimatum to reopen the station.
