By Uwem Ekoh
The Nigerian Automobile Technician Association (NATA), operating at the Mechanic Village along Abak Road in Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State has made a passionate appeal to the state government to provide them a conducive and specious place for their businesses.
Speaking with newsmen last week at the NATA Secretariat, the Chairman of NATA, unit 1, in the Mechanic Village, Obong, Comrade Ekanem Okon Etuk who was flanged by some members of his cabinet, said that lack of a conducive and good working environment have been the major problem of his members.
He requested that the state should as a matter of concern relocate them to a permanent place as earlier promised.
The Chairman further expressed worry over the development as according to him, the mechanic village is no longer accommodating members and that miscreants and quacks have taken advantage of the overflow of the mechanic village to perpetuate evil. Etuk maintained, “we are still crying to the state government to give us the brand new mechanic village as promised”. “We are appealing to the state government to come and rescue us from this problem”. “This place can no longer contain us because, spare parts dealers who were not originally captured in the map and plan of the mechanic village have taken over the whole place and young mechanics are graduating on daily basis and become masters for themselves”.
He used the medium to advised drivers and car owners within and outside Uyo metropolis to stop patronising road side mechanics working along Abak Road by Mechanic Village, stressing that any member of the public who does that stands a chance of risking his or her life, including their vehicles.
The NATA Chairman added that apart from taking risk, repairing cars on the road side has caused serious traffic along the mechanic village in recent time especially, in the morning and evening hours.
He said, ” we have tried our parts to stop this act but cannot do it on our own, that is why we are calling for relocation to a befitting place, not a place that will be worst than this”
Speaking about stealing of people’s properties and valuables, Etuk said, “mechanic village is one of the best places to repair vehicles, since I took over few months ago, we have been able to tackle stealing and other criminal acts in the place” .
