President Muhammadu has felicitated with the Muslim community as they commence the 2019 Ramadan Fast.

The President, through his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, on the night of Sunday, May 5, called for the continued peace, progress and prosperity of the country.

The President stressed that Islam was a religion of peace which upholds the values of tolerance and mutual coexistence with those of other faith, and called on the Muslims to eschew violence and build harmonious and friendly relationship with people this period.

Earlier, the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, had declared Monday, May 6, the first day of Ramadan fasting in Nigeria.

He said this through Simwal, a member of the moonsighting committee of Nigeria.

Simwal said the Sultan authorized him to make the declaration after the crescent moon for the month of Ramadan was sighted.

On his official Twitter page, Simwal wrote: “His Eminence the Sultan of Sokoto has authorized me to inform the general public that Ramadan crescent was sighted in different locations in Nigeria this evening, compilation of more results is going on. Taraweeh prayers can commence.”

Muslims observe their 29 or 30 days Fast during the Islamic month of Ramadan.
