Akwa United’s slow start to the season continues as former coach, Abdul Maikaba returned with his new club, Plateau United, and earned a deserved 2-2 draw in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Matchday 4, at the Godswiil Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.

Akwa United took the lead in the 19th minute with a well taken strike from Mfon Udoh after the striker was released by Etboy Akpan’s through pass.

Plateau United levelled the scores with Bernard Ovoke’s strike in the 65th minute. Ovoke beautifully and calmly dribbled Kodjovi Dadzie in the penalty area before releasing a curler to his near post to beat goalkeeper Jean Efala.

The Promise Keepers thought they had won the match when Mfon Udoh’s free kick in the 83rd minute found its way into the back of the net.

Coach Abdul Maikaba’s men found an equaliser in the second minute of additional time through Benjamin Turba’s well taken strike to beat Efala for the leveller.

It was coach Maikaba’s first return to the Nest of Champions. The Kano born tactician guided Akwa United to one Federation Cup title and a second-place finish in his time as coach of the Uyo base side.

Brazilian coach, Rafael Everton is winless in three competitive matches with Akwa United with just two out of nine points.
