Not less than five children alleged to be witches and wizards will on Monday, July 15, face their accusers in a Magistrate Court sitting in Mkpat Enin local government area of Akwa Ibom State.

The accusers and acclaimed servants of God – Evangelist Mary Smith Udo and her guest pastor from Oron, Prophet Iniobong Evans, pronounced the five children witches and wizards in their church during different prayer sessions and made them undergo different layers of wild and horrific deliverance.

The appearance of the accused in court is as a result of a report lodged at the Police by a volunteer of the Child’s Right and Rehabilitation Network (CRARN), Mr. Mbuotidem Jerome, who reported the torture meted on the children involving branding their bodies with hot machetes, starvation, giving them poisonous substances and other inhuman treatments.

The Director of CRARN, Mr Sam Itauma, who spoke on the case, noted that it was a peculiar one, given the fact that previous related cases had been stalled by witnesses or the prosecutors who either absconded during testimony or distorted the information due to their greed or pressure from some powerful individuals, mostly politicians, community leaders or religious leaders.

“We do not envisage this to take the same pattern for some subtly muted reasons. Unfortunately, these kids are always presumed guilty even by the educated, politicians and community leaders let alone the uneducated and the proletariat”.

“Ever wonder why none has ever protested when a child is tortured to death after being labeled a witch? It’s because people are not interested in you once you’re branded a witch or wizard. That is the height of superstition which blurs even the vision of the learned people – the doctors, engineers, lawyers, pen masters, etc” he said.
