Leaders from the Niger Delta have appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to choose the next Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) from Delta State.
The Leaders stated this in a letter addressed to the President on Wednesday, May 22, after agreeing unanimously on how to build on the political stability and unity of the region.
Their request was premised on the fact that Delta State was the next in line to produce the Commission’s next Chairman ‘knowing that Bayelsa State, Rivers State, and Akwa – Ibom State have completed their terms in successive ranking order’.

In their letter, the leaders lauded the sincerity of the President’s administration and urged him to maintain fairness and justice, irrespective of dissenting voices around him.
They insisted that the Chairmanship of the board is usually rotated among member states in alphabetic order as stated in the Act establishing the board while the position of Managing Director (MD) is rotated based on the “highest” quantum of oil produced amongst the states. “In applying the law that supports quantum as the basis for succession, Delta State falls next in line after Akwa Ibom”, they stated.
They stressed that their stance was not borne out of selfishness but out of the position of “the Act establishing the Board of the NDDC”.
