…Assembly Gate Barricaded, Journalists Denied Entrance

In an attempt to amend the 2015 House Standing Rule of the Jigawa State House of Assembly on Tuesday, May 7, a breakdown of law and order occurred, which led to the destruction of the Assembly Mace.

Reports reaching our newsdesk has it that the crisis was birthed when the Speaker of the House, Alhaji Isa Idris, mentioned that the House standing rule which made it impossible for former speakers and deputy speakers‎ to vie for the position of speaker again in subsequent assemblies would be amended.

Suspended or impeached Lawmakers would also be unable to contest for the position of Speaker with the amendment of the House rule, except those with cognate legislative experience.

This did not go down well with some of the Lawmakers who had in mind to return a former Speaker impeached three years ago, back as Speaker.

According to an eye witness, the member representing ‎Yankwashi state constituency Abdulrahman Alkassim, tendered his opposition of the proposed amendment and got the support of a majority of the members.

A counter opposition was served by other members of the House who wanted the amendment, and this led to a quarrel resulting in the destruction of the Assembly mace.

Our eye witness reports that there were underground movements by some members to impeach the present speaker, Alhaji Isa Idris and replace him with the impeached former speaker, Alhaji Idris Garba.

Meanwhile, the House has adjourned its next sitting to Thursday, May 9.
