Governor Udom Emmanuel is alive to the security and safety of lives and property in Akwa Ibom State.
The State Commissioner for Information, Sir Charles Udoh stated this on Tuesday, February 25 in Uyo during a Stakeholders Summit hosted by the State Commissioner of Police, CP Imohimi Oluwole Edgal held at Emjmm Hotel.
Sir Charles Udoh said, the commitment of the Governor towards the security of the state is evidenced in the enabling environment provided and strategic security measures put in place such as the provision of patrol vehicles for the police to enhance surveillance round the state.
Reiterating that issues of safety of lives and property is paramount to government, the Information Boss disclosed that in addition to assisting the police with patrol vehicles, Governor Emmanuel is also supporting other security agencies and the army with facilities to enhance their operations as well as providing them with conducive accommodation to make their stay in the state comfortable.
Represented by the Director of Public Relations in the Ministry, Mrs. Grace Akpan, the State Information helmsman said the facilitation of the opening of the Nigeria Navy Military secondary school in the state by government is also part of measures to boost security in the state.
He commended the security agencies and in particular the Police for the good work done in partnering the state government to maintain peace and security in the state.
Udoh lauded the Commissioner of Police particularly for the Stakeholders Summit on Community Policing which he said is apt and timely, reiterating that security is everybody’s business, while urging everyone to be involved in the security of the state to ensure a peaceful environment for investors to operate for the benefit of the people.
The state government spokesman who emphasized that Akwa Ibom is recognized nationally as the most peaceful and safest State to carry out business in Nigeria however called on the Police to gear efforts at curtailing the menace of herdsmen in some parts of the capital city who loiter the roads with cows which he observed causes great hindrance to free flow of traffic along such roads and may result in accidents.
Recalling incidents of alleged attack on indigenes by herdsmen in remote parts of the state, the Information Boss advised that urgent steps be taken by security operatives to ensure that no life or property is lost through the activities of the herdsmen in the state.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Imohimi Oluwole Edgal in his speech, expressed thanks to government for the magnanimous gesture towards the smooth operations of the Police in the state, through the provision of patrol vehicles and other facilities to boost security.
He called on all, particularly traditional chieftains to hold regular security meetings with security apparatuses in the local government areas to map out plans for effective security in the communities.
Present at the occasion were Commissioners and members of the state Executive Council, Permanent Secretaries, Security personnel of government, Local Government chairmen, traditional rulers, Police Community Relations Officers as well as security agencies and groups across the state.
