Following the global outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Education on Monday, March 23 held an emergency meeting with Heads of Educational Boards, Agencies and Tertiary Institutions in the State to appraise the situation in respective schools and institutions across the State in light of the pandemic.
In his address, Prof. Essien enjoined both public and private educational institutions in the State to maintain high hygienic standards and also dedicate quality time to educating pupils and students on measures to adopt in fighting the deadly disease despite no incidence being reported in the State.

This he said was geared towards equipping them to relay the message to parents and communities especially in the rural areas as they proceed on the 2nd term holiday.
Students he advised, should be made to observe social distancing (at least 1m) and seek medical attention should symptoms develop and stay informed as there was no need to panic or spread false information on social media.
Prof. Essien urged all private and public primary and secondary schools in the State to conclude all examination related issues on or before Friday, 27th March 2020 and proceed on 2nd term holiday while directing schools that have concluded second term examination to proceed on second term holiday immediately
Furthermore, the ministry Helmsman instructed Heads of schools to ensure that their schools maintain utmost strict hygienic conditions and take all necessary precautions to forestall the outbreak of the deadly virus, while calling on the hygienic Zonal Education Officers and Local Education Committee Offices to continually carry out routine surveillance in the respective domains to ensure strict hygienic compliance and report every case that needs immediate intervention to appropriate quarters.
Essien made it known that WAEC had suspended the 2019/2020 WAEC Examination Timetable till further notice, adding that any development concerning the forth coming examination will be duly communicated to prospective candidates in SS3 classes. He urged teachers to concretize arrangements to ensure students continue the revision even while on holidays.
Prof Essien disclosed that the 3rd Term will kick start on the 4th of May, 2020 and thanked students and parents in both private and public schools for their support and cooperation throughout the second term while wishing them a Happy Easter celebration.
