…more than 300 women empowered
As part of her continuous support for the welfare of women and widows in Akwa Ibom State, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Dr. Glory Edet, has empowered widows of fallen heroes in the state.
The empowerment programme which is the fourth edition of its kind was done on Wednesday, April 24, at the Women Development Centre, IBB Way, Uyo with the widows drawn from the 31 local government areas of the State.
The widows, under the auspices of the Nigerian Legion Widows’ Council, Akwa Ibom State, were charged to keep their hopes alive and believe in God as the one who watches over the needy and helpless.
Addressing the women, Dr. Glory thanked God for their individual lives, their resilience and doggedness towards life despite the loss of their breadwinners.
She reassured them that the sacrifices made by their husbands while protecting the country will not go in vain, adding that the present state government was committed to ensuring that the deceased’s families were empowered and given the needed assistance to support their businesses.
The Women Affairs Commissioner urged them to remain steadfast to the vision of Governor Udom Emmanuel, saying that “he is the only gender friendly and sensitive governor who prioritizes the Nigerian Legion Widows”.
“It is only a man who fears God that will do what Governor Udom is doing in Akwa Ibom State”, she added.
She advised them to shun unnecessary complains and brood but exhibit winning spirit and good Christ-like virtues in their daily interactions with people. She pleaded with them to inculcate the culture of blessing the children their husbands left behind no matter the circumstance, adding that God is the only one who caters for the needs of the downtrodden.
On her part, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs Margaret Edem, urged the widows not to relent efforts in the PDP led government, adding that Governor Udom is poised to giving more dividends of good governance in his second term.
She thanked God for the successful conduct of the general elections, stating that God used His powers to frustrate the devices of the enemies who threatened to bring Akwa Ibom people war.
She applauded the Women Affairs Commissioner for her leadership and advocacy for women equality and welfare in the State, describing her as a ‘rare breed’ with an unflinching love for women’s development.
In her remark, President of the state Nigerian Legion Widows, Mrs Paulina Umoren, commended the Commissioner for remembering the widows.
She expressed satisfaction with the Commissioner for using her office to touch and reach out to women who she said were ‘forgotten’.
Mrs Umoren while lauding Governor Udom for making the resources available to cater for the needs of the widows and help them stand firm on their feet, expressed optimism that his second term will bring more dividends of democracy to people at the grassroot.
