…Aniekan Bassey, Mark Esset not favoured by Party arrangement

…OBA insists on Anietie Eka

Bearing any last-minute change of plans, the yet to be inaugurated seventh session of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly will have Hon. Aniekan Uko as the next speaker of the House. This came on the heels of the recent zoning of the speakership slot to Uyo Federal Constituency, which sources confirm, revolves around the four representatives of Nsit Atai, Uruan, Ibesikpo Asutan and Uyo.

Speaking exclusively with our reporter on the eve of Wednesday, May 22, one of the House of Assembly member-elects who spoke with our reporter on anonymity hinted that after series of actions and reactions from political meetings held at nights, the party in its last meeting zoned the position of Speaker to Uyo Federal Constituency.

The source however noted that majority of the members who attended the said meeting rooted for the member representing Ibesikpo-Asutan State Constituency, Hon. Aniekan Uko.

Speaking further, the source added that the meeting which was arranged at the instance of the party was to chat a way forward to resolve the lingering crisis of the party, saying that with the resolutions reached, Aniekan Uko will emerge the next speaker of the House.

It would be recalled that Aniekan Uko grabbed the position of Speaker of the State House of Assembly in his first term, but was later removed due to the Appeal Court’s judgement ordering for a fresh election in the area in 2016. The source stated that the Ibesikpo lawmaker is driving on the same force that projected him in 2015 to create a soft landing for himself.

The source however noted that the members for Nsit Atai, Hon. Mark Esset and Uruan, Hon. Aniekan Bassey (returning members) have been canvassing for their selection on the basis of their commitment to the party.

Speaking on the previous selection of Anietie Eka, our source maintained that the Uyo State Constituency member-elect is the sole candidate of the Senator representing Uyo Senatorial District, Obong Bassey Albert. He noted that the forces against Eka are afraid of the emerging powers of OBA if he is allowed to emerge the next Speaker. He added that OBA wants to install Eka as the next speaker so that he could use that to penetrate some hidden characters during the 2023 governorship race.

On the other hand, the source told our reporter that some stakeholders in Uyo are afraid of the possible emergence of Anietie Eka as the Political leader of the area by virtue of his position as speaker of the House. According to the source, they are of the opinion that Eka will come to downturn their political arrangements as well as demystify their structures.

As at the last count, our source hinted that Senator Bassey Albert is still running to save Eka from being dropped, and that he is ready to bribe the elected members of the House to ensure that Eka is installed as the next Speaker of the House.

“My brother, as we speak now, OBA wants to install Anietie Eka as speaker by all means. He wants his plans to be perfected at all cost. OBA is contesting for 2023 governorship elections and he is putting all his loyalists in strategic positions. But majority of the stakeholders are insisting that Aniekan Uko be allowed to continue as Speaker of the House having being removed untimely by the Appeal Court judgement in 2016. OBA is looking at the other way round and he is considering only his 2023 governorship ambition but we will ensure that his plans will not work,” he said.
