From University Gardener to University Graduate: Man Bags First Degree from School he once Cleaned

An elderly man identified as Lukhanyo Mafu from South Africa has earned applauds from the social media for graduating from the same University where he used to tend the campus gardens.

An elderly man identified as Lukhanyo Mafu from South Africa has earned applauds from the social media for graduating from the same University where he used to tend the campus gardens.

A post of Mafu’s convocation picture posted on Twitter indicates that the former garden tender of the University of Fort Hare (UFH) in Alice, Eastern Cape, South Africa, who was paid N250 daily for the 7 years he worked as a gardener, is now a graduate of Social Science of the UFH.

A Twitter user shared Lukhanyo’s proud graduation moment with the world, describing his determination as inspiring, strengthening and uplifting.

Celebrating Mafu’s feat, Social media users have described the stride as an example of “black excellence”.

While some were furious about Mafu’s awkward pay as a gardener, others posited that time was never a factor to be considered in pursuing one’s dreams.
