A’Ibom Commences Evacuation of Mentally Distorted Persons from Streets

Akwa Ibom State Government on Wednesday, May 22, commenced the evacuation of mentally distorted persons from the streets of the state.

The exercise which was flagged-off by the Women Affairs and Social Welfare Commissioner, Dr. Glory Edet, was in accordance with the goal to ensure a serene and clean environment.

The Commissioner noted that the exercise was triggered by information from reliable sources that the number of mentally sick persons in the state was increasing by the day, adding that the government owed citizens the obligation of creating an enabling environment for their safety.

Dr. Edet stressed that the lunatics will be taken off the streets to psychiatrist hospitals where they will be treated by doctors, helped to live a normal life again and reunited with their families in various states, adding that their medical bills will be footed by the Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel.

She acknowledged the Governor for his humaneness towards the mentally sick and made a case for the ill treatment of the lunatics by members of the public.

She however called on citizens to be vigilant as 70% of the lunatics treated were found to be non-indigenes of the state.  


“I want to appeal to the security agencies to also help the State Government because most of the times when the mad people are well, we discover that almost 70% are not from Akwa Ibom State meaning that people bring them to the State when they hear that the government is evacuating lunatics, treating and rehabilitating them.”
