…National President Calls for Transparency from New Chair
The Akwa Ibom State branch of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has elected Comrade Sunny Okon James as its new Chairman.
Comrade James emerged the union’s Chairman in a keenly contested election, where he polled a total of 212 votes to defeat his opponent, Comrade Michael Uko Nyang of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), who garnered 196 votes.
The election was one of the features of the 8th Quadrennial Delegates Conference of NLC in the state.
Earlier, the State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, while commending the workers for supporting him at the polls, assured them of his administration’s commitment to their welfare.
The Governor, represented by the Commissioner for Economic Development, Labour and Manpower, Barr. Ekong Sampson, noted that workers were partners in progress, and that no government takes its workers for granted.
Meanwhile, the National President of the NLC, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, in his congratulatory message to the new State executives, urged them to try to complete any assignment left undone by their predecessors.
Represented by Barr. Emmanuel Ogbaja, the National Chairman charged the new leaders to make accountability, humility, discipline, and collective leadership their watchword, adding that “we do not want a situation where state council executives would conspire to defraud Congress of deductions and contributions remitted at the state level. We have taken a very stern position on this. I am sure none of the new leaders elected from this Delegates Conference would want to be the scapegoat.”
He also urged losers of the contest to “adorn a sportmanly attitude, adding, “If our interest is really to serve the workers, we do not expect extreme reactions to the outcome of this State Delegates Conference”.
Speakers at the event were the Head of Civil Service, Mrs Udoessien, the Honorary Special Adviser to the Governor on Labour Matters, Comrade Unyime Usoro, the State Chairman of Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Akamba Awah; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Economic Development, Labour and Manpower Planning, Dr. (Mrs.) Valerie Obot, former General Secretary of NUT and former Secretary of NLC in Akwa Ibom state, Comrade Obong Ikpe Obong, JP, among others.
