A’Ibom Police Commissioner Gives Report of Duty after 19 Days


The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, CP Zaki Ahmed has spoken about his activities in the state since he assumed duty 19 days ago.

During a briefing of newsmen at the Force headquarters in Uyo, on Wednesday, April 17, the Commissioner stated that he commenced work as the 27th Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom on the 29th day of March, 2019.

He observed the peaceful disposition of people of the state and promised to consolidate on existing strategies to maintain the status quo.

“By the grace of God, this State is rated as one of the most peaceful States in the Federation. I shall reinvigorate the existing strategies to achieve a more peaceful State”.

The Police Boss however lamented the “prevalence of heinous crimes such as Murder, Armed Robbery, Kidnapping, Cultism”, which he said have resulted in some arrests etc. “Most of the suspects arrested so far in the State have confessed to belonging to a particular cult group or the other, I therefore find a strong nexus between cultism and heinous crimes. Let me remind those involved in cultism in the State that the proscription order by the State government is still in force, and I will enforce it strictly”, he said. 

“The Command under my watch will have zero tolerance for perpetrators of these crimes. I call on those perpetrating any form of criminality in the State to desist forthwith or quickly leave the State as no resources will be spared in ensuring that they are brought to book”. He stressed.

He assured of his commitment to serve the people of Akwa Ibom with all amount of commitment and sought the cooperation of the citizenry to make it possible. “Let me assure you that am here to serve the good people of Akwa Ibom State; I will do so professionally, respecting the rule of law and in accordance with international best practices. I shall prioritize intelligence led policing, improved visibility policing, massive deployments of personnel, prompt response to distress calls and enhance community policing partnership”.

Speaking further, the Commissioner made public the Force’ success within his few weeks at the helm of affairs.

“Based on a credible intelligence, Operatives of Anti-Kidnapping Squad, Uyo, on 4/4/2019, at about 01:00am, stormed a kidnapping hideout at Afaha Efiat village in Etinan L.G.A, and arrested one of the most wanted kidnap kingpins in the State, one Edidiong Uduak Bill ‘m’ a.k.a “Barrister” aged 36yrs. During investigation, suspect confessed to be the overall leader of “Vikings” secret cult confraternity in Etinan, involved in several heinous crimes such as kidnappings and robberies within Etinan and Uyo areas. Suspect also confessed that sometime in 2017, he masterminded the kidnap of a lady at Akpan Essien Street, Uyo and kept her in an uncompleted building at Obio Etoi in Uyo Local Government Area, and collected a ransom of four million, five hundred thousand naira (N4.5M) before she regained her freedom. Suspect has been on the run for long and only resurfaced to carry out another evil act before he was arrested”.

“On 15/4/2019, at about 05:20am, relying a substantive Intel, SARS Operatives of the Command arrested one David Henry Asuquo ‘m’ and Gabriel Udofia ‘m’, members of a five-man robbery gang, who robbed one Uwem Chemist ‘m’ of the sum of five hundred thousand naira (N500,000.00) at gunpoint, in Ikot Amba village, Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area. During investigation, suspect confessed to the crime and mentioned other gang members still at large”.

“In addition, SARS Operatives of the Command arrested the following notorious armed robbery/kidnapping suspects, namely:  Ofonime Aniedi Thomas ‘m’ a.k.a “Charger”, Nsikak Jackson ‘m’, Ubong-Abasi Udo ‘m’, Akpan Udo ‘m’, Udo Sunday ‘m’ and Marshal Emmanuel ‘m’ who were planning to kidnap one Dr. Isong of Ibok Ndiya village in Ikono Local Government Area, before they were arrested by the Operatives. Three locally made pistols and four cartridges were recovered from them. The said Doctor identified UbongAbasi Udo ‘m’ as a son to his late friend, whom he assisted financially in burying his father after his demise, and also in dedicating his baby”.

“On 25/3/2019, Operatives of Oron Division arrested one Okon David Essien ‘m’ and Peace Peter Okon ‘f’ of Edoho Emma Street, Oron Local Government Area, who conspired and lured their son, now deceased, who they accused of witchcraft, one Joseph Okon David ‘m’ into an engine boat with the pretense of going to cut bamboo sticks in a swamp to be used for construction of kitchen. While at the swamp, the suspects removed concoction, prepared with poisonous seed called “asene” and water, used enema and pumped the concoction into the deceased’s stomach leading to his instant death. The suspects secretly dug a shallow grave in the swamp and buried the deceased”.

“Also on 8/4/2019, following a complaint, Operatives of ‘D’ Division Itam, arrested a commercial motorcyclist identified as Ubong Uduak ‘m’ who diverted his passenger, one Mandu Etim ‘f’ of Ikot Idaha, Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area to Nung Ukim Ikono village in Uyo Local Government Area, and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her without her consent, and also dispossessed her of a Techno phone valued N40,000, Necklace valued N3,000 and cash of N7,590. Victim boarded the suspect’s motorcycle at Ekom Iman Junction to Abak on 29/2/2019. During search, operatives recovered the said phone and cash from the suspect. Suspect has been charged to court”.   

“Furthermore, on 8/4/2019, while on intensive patrol, Operatives of ‘D’ Division Itam, reasonably suspected one Akan Ekpedeme Bassey ‘m’. During questioning, the suspect could not give satisfactory account of himself. Operatives carried out instant search on him and recovered three locally made short guns with seven live cartridges from the suspect. During investigation, suspect admitted that he is a member of “Baga” confraternity returning from a meeting in Cross River State. Suspect has been arraigned in court”.

“On 2/4/2019, Operatives of ‘D’ Division Itam, arrested one Saviour Effiong ‘m’ and Adamu Suleiman ‘m’, who broke into the house of one Hassan Gbenga Sampson ‘m’ of No. 49 Ibup Street, Itam in Itu Local Government Area, and carted away one Gionee X1 phone valued N35, 000, one Gionee P8W phone valued N30, 000, one Techno phone valued N7, 000, Plasma television valued N150, 000 and wallet containing N5, 000. During search, four (4) GSM phones and one Plasma television were recovered. Suspects were arraigned in court”.

“On 4//4/2019 at about 07:00am, Operatives of “Operation Purge” in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area, arrested a notorious cultist/ armed robbery suspect, one John Emmanuel Effiong ‘m’, aged 29yrs. During investigation, suspect confessed his involvement in five-armed robbery operations before his arrest, also admitted that he is member of “Iceland” Confraternity cult group”.

“On 27/3/2019 at about 10:00pm, on a distress call, combine team of SARS, Anti-Robbery Squad and ‘C’ Division Operatives arrested one Abraham Friday Ntuk ‘m’ and Idaresit John Akpan ‘m’, who attacked and robbed one Ekong Bassey Obot ‘m’ of his Infinix phone valued N65,000 at gunpoint, also shot him on his right hand. Two locally made pistols, one cartridge and four rounds of .9mm ammunition were recovered from the suspects. During investigation, the suspects made useful statement that led to the arrest of one Nsisong Effiong Effiong ‘m’, who was a staff to the victim, and masterminded the robbery operation. Suspect has confessed to the crime”.

“On 15/4/2019, SARS Operatives arrested one Joseph Bassey Michael ‘m’ of Obio Etoi village, Uyo Local Government Area, who pretended to be taking his nine (9) months old child, one David Bassey ‘m’ to the hospital for treatment, but handed over the child to an agent, one Peter Sunday ‘m’ who assisted him in selling the said child for N200, 000”. 

“While some of these suspects have been charged to court, others will also be charged at the completion of investigation”, the Police Boss noted.
