Agric Ministry Distributes Farm Inputs to Schools in Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District

…Commends Governor Udom for backing his words with actions

In order to encourage practical agriculture as well as boost food production, the Ministry of Agriculture, Akwa Ibom State has distributed farm inputs to Public Secondary Schools in Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District in the State.

Performing the flag-off today, Wednesday, 4th May at State College, Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr Glory Edet recalled that the distribution is in fulfilment of the promised made last week during a meeting with Principals of Schools and Agricultural Science teachers.

Dr. Edet stated that the revival of Agriculture in the State is borne out of the Governor Udom’s passion for Agriculture, as indicated in all the encouragements in the Agricultural Sub-Sector.

She appreciated the Principals of Schools and Agricultural Science teachers in Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District for their prompt response to the event, adding that it is a sign of success to the programme.

The Commissioner who appealed that the inputs are strictly for the school farms, said between June and July this year, a team from the Ministry of Agriculture will go round to inspect the progress of the schools farms.

While urging the benefitting schools to consult the Ministry, in event of the need of technical know-how, the Agric Boss advised them to harvest the products on maturity, sell and use the proceeds to address some challenges in the school.

The Agriculture Boss also revealed that similar exercise will subsequently take place in Uyo and Eket Senatorial Districts.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Mrs. Mary Ukoette thanked the Governor for approving the conduct of the exercise as well as the Commissioner for keeping the promise made.

Mrs. Ukoette said the event is geared towards encouraging student’s in practical Agriculture as well ensuring food sufficiency.

In her goodwill message, the Principal of Community Comprehensive Secondary School, Iko Esop, Etim Ekpo, lauded the State Government, Ministry of Agriculture for the initiative and promised to put the farm inputs to good use for optimal output.

Farm inputs distributed include improved cassava stems, maize seeds among others.

In attendance at the event were Directors in the Ministry of Agriculture, Principal, State College, Ikot Ekpene, Principals and teachers of benefitting schools.
