A 100-level student of the Niger Delta University has been killed following an accidental discharge from a personnel of the Nigerian Civil Defence and Security Corps (NSCDC).

A 100-level student of the Niger Delta University has been killed following an accidental discharge from a personnel of the Nigerian Civil Defence and Security Corps (NSCDC).

According to eye witnesses, the deceased was shot thrice by the personnel who in the course of freeing his gun at a drinking bar, discharged 3 bullets accidentally on his victim.

The NSCDC personnel is reported to have been on official escort duty alongside some police officers, to Chief Abel Ebifemowei, a chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC) from the area.

“They however went to cool-off at the bar when the incident occurred”, an eyewitness reports.

Meanwhile, the APC chieftain, Chief Ebifemowei who responded to enquiries on the incident confirmed and described it as unfortunate and sad but denied being at a drinking bar.

“It is a lie that I was at the Usual Bar when the incident happened and I was not with the official vehicle of Senator Lokpobiri. It is an act of mischief to include Senator Lokpobiri into the incident. The Civil Defence personnel with me was trying to free his gun when it went off. The accident was not about me or the Senator Lokpobiri campaign organization”, he said.

“It is unfortunate that he did not face it up. The affected personnel was not drunk as claimed. It was just an accidental discharge which every security personnel pray not to happen to him. I was not at a bar. I was in Amassoma to observe the Local Government election ahead of the coming governorship poll”, he stated further.

He confirmed that the corpse of the deceased had been taken to Yenagoa by the Police and the NSCDC personnel in custody of the Divisional Police Officer of Amassoma.

The deceased was a 100-level student of Petrochemical Department from the faculty of Engineering, Niger Delta University, Amassoma in Southern Ijaw Local Government area of Bayelsa State.
